For the first time, at this year’s edition of the CEBIT, the Deutsche Messe AG has implemented the iBeacon solution provided by Sensorberg, and thus equipped the fair’s facilities with many hundredths of Beacons. The project, both technically and as regards to content successful, constitutes the promising start of an international cooperation between the Deutsche Messe AG and Sensorberg GmbH.

Hannover/Berlin. Jointly with the Berlin-based company Sensorberg, the Deutsche Messe AG implemented as one of the first companies worldwide on a large scale the iBeacon technology at this year’s edition of the CeBIT and experienced a tremendous success.

As a full service provider, besides the hardware in the form of Beacons, Sensorberg supplied a Software Development Kit (SDK) that was integrated in the already existing CeBIT-App for iOS and Android and the Cloud-based Beacon Management Platform. This platform permits to create and manage the notifications that will be sent on the visitors’ smartphones. The Beacons, placed at the entrances of the fair’s halls and directly in the exhibition area, provided visitors with location-relevant services such as information about events of the day or special offers.

Once a visitor had installed the official CeBIT app on his smartphone (iOS as well as Android) and entered the transmission range of a Beacon he received notifications on his smartphone about, for instance job offers, halls plans, current events or available services.

The iBeacon technology has been especially installed in the pavilion 11 on the occasion of the “Tec2You”, as well as in the “job and career” hall 9. Besides, visitors were informed of the daily menu of nearby restaurants and also received notices about current conferences and events of the day while in the bus to reach the exhibition halls. The iBeacon technology also permitted to address visitors directly at the exhibition stands. Two companies used the iBeacon technology successfully as touch-point to this purpose. “The next step will be to revolutionize indoor navigation with iBeacons for all fairs, on a worldwide scale. We are already able to propose an iBeacon solution for it. The combination of different use case possibilities of Beacons, as for instance notifications, navigation and touch-point, is terrific for fairs and events promoters. We are able to solve existing problems in the field of customer service through this technology”, says Sensorberg founder Alexander Oelling.

iBeacon enthusiasts did not only look for areas in the transmission range of Beacons, they also rushed to the Sensorberg stand in hall 9 to get the chance to ask their questions directly to Alexander Oelling, Sensorberg’s founder.

The next step of expansion of the technology is expected soon: at the Hannover Messe 2014 from April 7th 2014 to April 11th 2014, the Deutsche Messe AG and Sensorberg will present further applications of it. The Deutsche Messe AG wants to extend its range of activity by using the iBeacon technology as a service module at fairs and events. Sensorberg will present new use cases at its stand, e.g. data protection, flight/luggage security, healthcare and production. “The fields of application are huge”, according to Robert Peschke, Sensorberg’s founder. “With our software bundle and Beacon Management Platform, we provide a solution with which any iBeacon-based application can be made reality. The technology also offers various possibilities to the industrial sector and retail.”

Sensorberg’s team, its business angels and investors are glad that this first large-scale rollout of its iBeacon solution at the CeBIT 2014, the biggest IT-fair worldwide, has been a complete success.
