While the word “innovation” evokes excitement and delight in many of us, the word “digital” does not always evoke only positive emotions, but also some concerns. That’s why a lot of myths have grown up around the topic of smart locks and lockers, which are worth taking a look at.
What is a Smart Locker?
Smart Locker is a secure storage solution that has integrated technology built into it, to automate the delivery, notification and distribution of packages between suppliers and end customers, or simply to enable digital access to and management of personal lockers/cabinets for private clients.
How does it work?
Opening, closing or managing a box is very simple and secure. Suppliers who deliver shipments or goods to an empty smart locker receive a one-time access code, which they usually enter using a PIN pad device.
The recipient is automatically notified that their package is ready for pickup and can pick it up from their own smart locker by opening it using, for example, a smartphone app or their personal PIN code.
Via the app, the user can easily book, open and close the box. No keys, coins or numeric codes are needed. Digital access to the locker is encrypted and verified with a personal PIN or biometric authentication.
Unlike traditional locks, the intelligent locking system reminds you to empty the locker first, e.g. in the office or gym. After leaving the building, the user automatically receives a reminder message on his cell phone. It quickly becomes clear that smart locks offer many benefits. Still, smart lockers are not yet as widespread as they could be. This is because there are many misconceptions about smart locks.
Myth #1: Smart locks are difficult to install
Smart locks often impress with the multiple uses they offer, such as keyless entry, remote control via smartphone, more control over who has access to your front door, etc. However, after deciding on smart lockers, most people face the problem of installation.

Myth #2: Smart key systems are not secure
There is growing concern about the security of Internet-connected devices and keyless entry systems - especially when it comes to the safety of one’s valuables. This concern is justified- but good data protection succeeds above all when only the most necessary data is stored and, if possible, this data cannot be assigned to individual persons. When collecting data, only the information that is necessary for the system should be stored and deleted as soon as it is no longer needed. It is also possible to replace data and entries about specific individuals with pseudonyms. This ensures that this data can no longer be clearly assigned to specific individuals. The misconception that Bluetooth connections are not secure does not really hold true, because Bluetooth is always evolving, just like any other technology. However, Bluetooth connections are quite secure: In order to transfer data between two Bluetooth-enabled devices, they must first be paired, otherwise, no data exchange is possible. The pairing devices form an initialization key with 128 bits. This protects the exchange of the actual link key. The link key is only known to the two pairing partners that want to communicate with each other. Authentication is performed using the challenge-response method. During the actual data transmission, the transmitted data is additionally encrypted. To prevent “eavesdropping,” the radio frequency changes between 79 channels 1600 times per second. Compared to traditional security systems, which are much easier to tamper with, electronic locks provide a secure and practical option for storages and lockers.
The short answer: Smart locks are virtually impossible to pick.
Myth #3: Smart locks are easier to hack than traditional locks
A common misconception is that smart locks are easy to hack. Yet this belief is not entirely true, as the communication between the lock and the “key” in its form is absolutely unique. Especially with smart locks operated by smartphones, the encrypted message between the two devices is virtually impossible for hackers to imitate.
Myth #4: If the smartphone is lost or stolen, strangers can open the lock
Nowadays, almost all of us own a smartphone, which we rarely want to do without. With many apps, we give away our data and personal information with just a few clicks. With network-enabled locks, however, it’s easy to feel uneasy, because what happens if the smartphone falls into the wrong hands, gets stolen, or is lost? The risk of losing a mobile device gives everyone worrying thoughts. However, in reality, it is almost impossible. Most locks have a personal PIN code. Moreover, even all smart key systems allow you to log in from different devices and change the access code for your smart locks remotely with the help of dedicated customer service. Myth #5: Smart locks don’t work during power outages or without the internet
Access is managed by card or smartphone app. All of this is secure thanks to the “offline” feature we developed.
